Newcastle United Supporter's Trust have joined Cooperatives North East in a bid to establish itself as a viable and realistic body to instigate takeover of the club from current owner Mike Ashley.
A statement from the Trust read:
NUST is now a member of Co-operatives North East (CNE) which has been established to promote, build and represent co‑operative enterprises in North East England. Our region is home to a range of co-operative enterprises providing vital goods and services to a range of clients and customers. Building on the region's rich and vibrant co-operative sector, CNE was established in 2007 with a dual role as a regional co-operative council and a dedicated co-operative development body.
CNE define a co-operative as ...
'... an autonomous association of people or businesses united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise. Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. '
