'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Shay Testimonial

Shay Given will be the next Newcastle United player to qualify for a testimonial after putting pen to paper on a new five-year contract.

On the day the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper became the club's longest-serving player, he also signed an extension which will take him beyond the 10-year mark as a Magpies player.

Given: 'I've already had nine great years here and I'm now looking forward to five more. Hopefully we can win something in that time because I'm still very hungry to win things as a Newcastle player. I've said before I feel like an adopted Geordie now. The fans here are second to none and St James's Park is a fantastic place to play football. I'm extremely delighted to get my new contract sorted.

'I'd like to thank the chairman and the board for what they've done and also all the fans for the support they've given me since I joined Newcastle United.'

With 380 United appearances already under his belt, Given is on course to break Jimmy Lawrence's all-time club record of 496, which has stood for 84 years.
