Jewell: 'Roeder Should Not Get Job'

Newcastle United will unveil Glenn Roeder as their new boss on Monday after winning the backing of the Premiership's chairmen in their bid to appoint him.

But Wigan boss Paul Jewell has questioned the Premier League's decision to allow Roeder to continue as Newcastle manager without the necessary qualifications.

Jewell: 'I wonder if Newcastle were Wigan whether it would have happened. I'm not a big believer in badges, and I think Glenn is a decent guy and a decent manager, but that isn't my issue.

'The issue is that the rules are there and it's a little bit of big brother.

'People spend a lot of time on acquiring the badges, so why put the rules in if you are not going to adhere to them?

'It doesn't mean that just because you have the badge it makes you a good manager because some people who have these badges and take you on these courses, they could not do the job we do.

'But if the rules are in place then you should stick to them.

'It's like your driving test. When I was 13 I knew I could drive and I didn't want to take the test when I was older, but I had to do it because that's the law of the land.'
