1970: Born August 13, Newcastle.
1988: Signs professional forms with Southampton on April 14, five days after making a sensational full debut for Saints when he became the youngest player to score a Football League hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Arsenal at The Dell.
1990: Scores three goals in 26 league matches for Saints in 1989-90.
1991: Nets four times in 36 league games during 1990-91 season. Earns England Under-21 call-up, going on to score a record 13 goals in 11 appearances at that level including seven in four matches at the Toulon tournament in France which England won.
1992: Makes senior England debut at Wembley on February 19, scoring in 2-0 win over France. Travels with England squad to European Championships in Sweden, playing in 0-0 draw against France in Malmo.
July - Moves to Blackburn in then British record £3.3million deal. Scores twice on Blackburn debut in 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and goes on to net 22 times before suffering cruciate knee ligament injury against Leeds on Boxing Day and missing the rest of the campaign.
1994: Earns reward for successful comeback from injury by being voted Footballer of the Year having scored 31 Premiership goals in the 1993-94 season.
1995: His 34 Premiership goals lead Blackburn to their first championship for 81 years. Voted PFA Player of the Year.
1996: Becomes first player to reach 100 goals in the Premiership, taking just over three seasons to do so. Wins Golden Boot as top goalscorer at Euro 96 after netting five times, against Switzerland, Scotland, Holland (two) and Germany.
Moves to home town club Newcastle in then world record £15million deal.
Injury sees Shearer miss large parts of 1996-97 season, but he still scores 28 goals in all competitions as Newcastle finish second in the Premiership and qualify for the Champions League.
1997: Suffers a broken leg and ruptured ankle ligaments during the pre-season Umbro Tournament at Goodison Park in July and subsequently misses England's final two World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Italy.
1998: Makes first international start for nine months in 1-1 draw in Switzerland on March 25.
Scores the only goal of the game as Newcastle beat Sheffield United at Old Trafford on March 7 to reach FA Cup final. Finds the net twice as England beat Portugal 3-0 at Wembley on April 22.
April 30 - Appears to kick Leicester midfielder Neil Lennon in the face during goalless draw at Filbert Street.
May 6 - Charged by the Football Association over the incident.
May 12 - FA disciplinary panel return not guilty verdict.
June/July - Plays in all four of England's World Cup games, scoring the opener in the first match with Tunisia and from the penalty spot during the 90 minutes in the second-round penalty shoot-out defeat against Argentina.
1999: April 11 - Leads Newcastle to the FA Cup final for the second year running with two goals at Old Trafford in semi-final against Tottenham.
May 17 - Finishes the Premiership season with a tally of 21 goals.June 3 - Named captain of England team to face Sweden in European Championship qualifier at Wembley, his 50th cap.
August 7 - In opening match of season - his 100th game for Newcastle - is sent off for first time in his career for serious foul play. Relationship deteriorates with manager Ruud Gullit.
August 25 - Dropped by Gullit for St James' clash with rivals Sunderland.
Comes on as substitute but does not score as Newcastle lose 2-1.
September 4 - Former Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan stands by Shearer, who keeps England captaincy and scores hat-trick in 6-0 win over Luxembourg at Wembley in Euro 2000 qualifier.
September 19 - Scores five goals in 8-0 rout of Sheffield Wednesday, Sir Bobby Robson's first match at St James' Park.
2000: February 26 - Announces he will retire from international football after Euro 2000 finals.
June 17 - Scores winner in Euro 2000 1-0 victory over Germany after having steroid injection in knee.
June 20 - Scores penalty but his international career ends in dismal failure as England are eliminated by a 3-2 defeat to Romania.
2001: February 24 - Returns after nine-week absence due to knee injury in a home defeat to Manchester City.
March 10 - Breaks down in training with a recurrence of the knee injury and is referred to a specialist.
April 3 - A second operation on tendinitis in his knee leaves Shearer struggling to be fit in time for the new season.
July 16 - Wins OBE in Queens' Birthday Honours for services to football.
November 27 - Nets twice in first half of Worthington Cup fourth-round clash with Ipswich to bring up a century of goals in a Newcastle shirt.
2002: April 20 - Scores 200th Premiership goal against Charlton at St James'
Park. Finishes the season with 27 Premiership goals as Newcastle claim fourth in the table and qualify for the Champions League.
October 19 - Scores the 300th goal of his club career when he converts a penalty for Newcastle against his old club Blackburn.
November 23 - Scores his 100th Premiership goal for Newcastle in 5-3 defeat at Manchester United, becoming the first man to accomplish the feat with two clubs.
November 28 - Charged by UEFA after elbowing Inter Milan's Fabio Cannavaro during 4-1 Champions League defeat the previous night.
November 29 - Banned for two Champions League matches by UEFA.
December 26 - Scores the 350th goal of his career as Newcastle lose 4-3 at Bolton.
2003: January 18 - Scores in 10.5 seconds against Manchester City at St James' Park.
February 26 - Nets his first Champions League goal from open play against Bayer Leverkusen, goes on to complete hat-trick by half-time.
March 15 - Scores his 144th Newcastle goal in his 200th league appearance for them, a penalty in a 2-0 win at Charlton which takes him third in the all-time list of Magpies goalscorers.
September 11 - Agrees one-year contract extension with the Magpies, seeing him through to the end of the 2004-05 season.
October 4 - Scores his 250th career goal in Newcastle's Premiership match against Southampton.
2004: August - Announces he will retire at the end of the season.
2005: February 2 - Scores 250th Premiership goal in Newcastle's 1-1 draw at Manchester City.
April 1 - Announces he will play on as player-coach for the 2005-06 season.
October 26 - Shearer scores the only goal as Newcastle beat Grimsby 1-0 in the Carling Cup, but was left fuming by what he felt was an elbow to the face by Mariners defender Justin Whittle.
January 7 - Scored his 200th goal for Newcastle against Mansfield in the FA Cup third round, equalling the club record of Jackie Milburn.
February 2 - Newcastle announce Shearer will assist caretaker boss Glenn Roeder following Graeme Souness' dismissal.
February 4 - Scores 201st goal for Newcastle at home to Portsmouth tobecome top scorer in the club's history.
April 17 - Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder admits concern that Shearer's career could be over after suffering a knee injury in 4-1 win over Sunderland.
April 21 - Admits his career has been ended by a medial ligament injury sustained at the Stadium of Light.
