Newcastle United make Kilgallon offer

Newcastle United have officially made an approach for highly-rated Sheffield United defender Matthew Kilgallon, reports The Star.

It is understood that the bid is close to £2 million, and that even though Sheffield United are yet to acknowledge the progress in negotiations, sources confirmed to the newspaper that the Magpies are close to sealing a deal for the former England U21 International.

Blades gaffer Kevin Blackwell is considering moves for the likes of Fulham's Toni Kallio, Crystal Palace's Jose Fonte and Andrew Davies from Stoke as a replacement for Kilgallon, who is expected to complete his much coveted transfer to the St James' Park club in the coming week.

'It's imperative that we try to keep our best players here,' Blackwell said. 'Obviously everyone knows what is going on with Killa.

'It's not certain that he'll leave but, if he does, then ideally we don't want to lose anymore.

We're on a good run and we are making progress in the table. But we're paper thin and we can't carry too many absentees.

If he (Killa) does move on then we have to bring somebody else in.'

Kilgallon would be a good signing for us.
