'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Retrospective: "2-1 in your cup final"

Currently working in Leeds, the hallmarks of a fallen side are there for all to see. Rather than football shirts, Leeds` main sporting pastime seems to now be the Rhinos rugby league team, with many in the city now having decamped to wearing various rugby paraphernalia. Whilst I can`t see many in Newcastle turning to wear Falcons or Gateshead Thunder gear, it serves as a startling reminder of how quickly things changed.

Travelling to Scunny, I had an unfamiliar pang of sympathy for the Dirty Leeds as we pulled up to the garden shed that is Glanford Park. Surrounded by a Frankie & Bennys, KFC and the Lincolnshire equivalent of the Metro Centre outlying retail park, it really hammered home the gravity of how much we`ve sunk.

As usual our fans were in great voice, with support unstinting. However Hughton, not Simpson and Zurab, handed Scunny the win, through his ultra negative tactics of 4-5-1. For the first half hour they were utterly petrified and, if we`d had some support for Carroll, could have really done a number on them. Instead we only saw the half effective Harewood come on for the last 25 minutes.

That reticence allowed the Irons to compose themselves and start making some serious inroads down our left. Two goals by Woolford put a major dent in our promotion challenge as we stumbled for the fourth game. Even Kevin 'No, no, no, no, no, no` Nolan couldn`t continue his one man promotion charge for us, despite notching again.
