'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Shay praises Robson regime

Speaking about us for the first time since we got relegated, our former number one and now Man City player Shay Given has spoken about his sheer admiration for what his favourite manager Sir Bobby Robson achieved whilst in the hotseat at St James' Park. The Lifford Leprechaun said:

"I am still full of admiration for what Sir Bobby has done even now. Nobody can question what we achieved back then.

It was magnificent to finish third, fourth and fifth in three years and he has easily had the most success of any modern manager. Anybody who has ever met him can see that, and it would be tremendous to see a full house on Tyneside for this match.

I am sure the supporters will turn out for him as they always do, and they will see it as a day for Sir Bobby. Sir Bobby is an inspiration to us all. Not just in football, but in life as well.

Since he has fallen ill he has worked so hard to raise more awareness and he seems determined to keep building up the pot. This game is even more evidence of that.

He has dealt with cancer the way he has lived his life and he is a true fighter. He could have just locked himself away during this difficult time, but he has shown courage and bravery beyond belief. I know at first hand what that is like because I have had my own experiences with it.

Wherever Sir Bobby has been he has commanded respect. The North East fans recognise that, and he has built up a great fanbase not only in Newcastle but places like Porto, Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven as well.

He did a great job with England, and when he was at Newcastle we were flying high in the Champions League. We had great memories of playing in the best stadiums in Europe and I really enjoyed that stage of my career."
