'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Dabs supports Big Al

The Chronicle today raked up our former legend Nik the Greek, him of the Mackem slaying fame, to give some of his insights over the current state of the club. Nikos was extremely focussed on one aspect alone and that was the future of Alan Shearer. A former teammate of the player, Nik certainly endorsed his former skipper saying:

'One thing is for sure, Alan is the only man who can unite the fans, the players and the club. If I was chairman, I would have him as manager. You would have to be a lunatic not to put him in charge.

He's the only person the fans will have. He's an idol, inspirational. When the team was relegated, the reaction of the fans was unbelievable. That last game was live on Greek television and people were asking me 'How come such a big club can be relegated and the fans are still applauding?'.

I told them it is because of Alan Shearer, they are cheering for him. You cannot blame him, you cannot judge him yet. He can be a shield to the club. It needs protecting and with him there, he can do that.

The owner you can criticise because his decisions have cost the club. But Alan is the right man. It's a new era and hopefully he can get the chance to turn it around.

He was not just someone who scored goals, he was a leader outside and inside the club. He was always a very single-minded personality. He is a man of principles, who when he says something, does not change his mind the next day.

As a man and as a footballer, he has the respect of everyone. Let's hope the club can find a solution soon.'

I think you're right, Ross. The only man who can hold everything together in the dressing room, on the training ground and in the Championship cauldron will be Alan Shearer. It is a very competitive division and you'll need to hold together the best of the squad and bounce back with promotion. Back Shearer and he'll do it.
