Alan Hansen On Relegation Battle

Alan Hansen, pundit for the New Football Pools on the battle for survival.

Newcastle are a side seriously struggling for both confidence and goals and now face a really tough trip to Anfield this weekend where you wouldn`t expect them to get anything on current form.

Alan Shearer had highlighted their 3 remaining home games as must wins to survive but after drawing 0-0 against Portsmouth last time out it doesn`t look great.

They face some tough away matches so with the importance of the two home games to Middlesbrough and Fulham increasing, the pressure is on. To put it into context, two wins from those games at St James` are the equivalent of 50% of the home matches they`ve managed to win all season, four.

Luckily for Newcastle, Hull the team directly above them are in absolute freefall. They`re on a terrible run of form and face some tough games of their own. They have a 3-point cushion at the moment which may be all important as neither side is showing that they are likely to go a run of wins. However, there is always a side who manages to string some results together but whether it`s either of these two or Boro or West Brom is in question.

With games running out, it promises to be an exciting climax to the season with it all to play for. One thing`s for certain with Alan Shearer in charge, Newcastle will be fighting till the bitter end to stay up.
