'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Post Pompey: Bassong

Having fulfilled his part of the bargain by helping our much maligned defence to a 0-0, Sebastian Bassong spoke out following the Portsmouth game about his disappointment about failing to gain the two extra points that would have given us the slimmest chance of survival. An Arsenal target allegedly, it looks like the last four games could be the last we see of Super Seb. He said:

"We`re disappointed because we needed a win. Everyone knows the situation, and if we don`t win our home games, then it will be really hard to stay up. Now we have drawn, so it will be harder, but we believe and we will keep playing.

I can understand that the fans are very worried. The situation is not the best. I can just say to them to stay behind us because we need them. Without them, we will have already lost, so if they stay behind us we will try to give the maximum to stay up, and it will be easier with them.

It was a really, really amazing atmosphere, and I must say thank you to them, because they were unbelievable. The atmosphere was wonderful - the fans were amazing. It`s not the same in France. I am used to playing in the biggest stadiums in France - and I have seen the biggest derby in France - but St James`s Park is really different. It`s the best stadium I have played in, and that`s why I like Newcastle."
