'If It's Football, It's Vital'

'Shola worked his socks off without much success'

Newcastle United gaffer Alan Shearer was very pleased with the way his side showed character in their 1-1 draw against Stoke City last night, and commended 20-year-old Andy Carroll's hunger and desire to play a part in the Toon's survival.

Speaking after the game, Shearer said: 'I watched him [Carroll] score two goals for the reserves last week and I asked him to show me his hunger and desire. And he did. I took him aside and said that he has a big part to play for us in the remaining fixtures.'

Mentioning the ineffective Shola Ameobi, the Toon boss stated the obvious: 'Shola worked his socks off for much of the evening, albeit without much success. To be fair to him, he gave it his all, it just did not work.'

The gaffer also revealed why Ameobi was brought into the side in the first place, with Oba Martins apparently out with a groin injury which he supposedly woke up with. Big Al was as skeptical as the fans on that one too.
