Hughton slams Wigan's 'Beckham'

Newcastle United stand-in manager Chris Hughton has slammed Ryan Taylor for his mediocre displays for the first-team since arriving from Wigan Athletic in January.

Lactics boss Steve Bruce had once described Taylor as Wigan's own 'Beckham' comparing the 24-year-old to the England International known for his free-kick prowess.

However, following a string of unimpressive performances, and total ineffectiveness from set-pieces, Coach Chris has laid into the player, and reiterated that dead-ball situations are key to the Magpies staying up in the league.

"[Taylor] does have this ability from set plays, and when you have it you have to use it.

"The fact is as a side we must score more from set plays. Especially at this stage of the season."

Hughton played diplomat however by stating how important Taylor was to his plans, and to the squad in general, despite his inability to make anything of dead-ball moments.

'[He] is about more than set pieces - he is a great team player, as he proved by adapting to playing on the left for Wigan for so long.'
