'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Local lad Carroll signs new deal at Toon

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has ended speculation linking him with a move away from St. James' Park by putting pen to paper on a new deal which will keep him with the Magpies until the summer of 2012.

Stand-in manager Chris Hughton has stated that Andy Carroll's new three-and-a-half year contract is 'well deserved' following the youngsters spirited performances for the first team this season.

'It's well-deserved and I'm very happy for Andy,' Hughton said.

'He's a young, talented player who has made his way through the youth team and has made a contribution at first-team level.

'He came into the team in January and played very well and scored a couple of goals.

'Andy's a local lad as well which is always nice for the fans and we hope he has a big future here.'

It appears that the fact that he is a 'local lad' played a significant role in the contract offer. If that is the motivation for the club to keep under-performing players, then, it is expected that Steven Taylor may be next in signing a deal which will keep him at Newcastle United until the club are relegated to League One.
