United and Wigan share Commons desire

Newcastle United are ready to raid Championship side Derby County in a bid to snap up highly-rated Rams midfielder Kris Commons from under the noses of Premiership rivals Wigan Athletic, reports The Daily Star.

The 25-year-old signed for Derby on a free transfer last summer, and after an impressive first-half of the season at Pride Park, was linked with a 2.5 million switch to Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

However, United, and rivals Wigan are now battling out to out-do each other in their respective bids to sign the Scotsman, who has appeared four times for his country on International level.

The Magpies are desperate for a wide player who can play on the right-flank, but are also considering Wolves winger Michael Kightly.

Good championship player, but whether he could keep that standard up in the premiership is another question.
