Flamboyant Magpies foiled by sub-par Taylor

Ryan Taylor made a mockery of the Magpies' impressive display against league leaders Manchester United, when his defensive error gave The Red Devils a fortunate win at St. James' Park.

Peter Lovenkrands gave Newcastle the lead in the 10th minute after a dreadful error by United keeper Edwin Van Der Sar inside the penalty area. The Old Trafford outfit equalised with a deflected Wayne Rooney shot in the 21st minute, and Ryan Taylor gifted the away side the winner in the 57th minute with defending best described in words a responsible journalist dare not spell-out.

In a match where Newcastle United looked to be a side rejuvenated by the embarrassing loss against Bolton Wanderers, Jonas Gutierrez showed again why the fans love him so much. Instrumental in setting up the first goal, his work-rate was fantastic.

Ryan Taylor was poor from set-pieces, while Alan Smith, and Geremi both looked like they lacked match fitness. Sebastien Bassong and Jose Enrique impressed, and finally Fabricio Coloccini began to figure as the leader he should be.

Please, let's leave Geremi out of the squad. Both him, and Smith showed a notoriously high level of shoddy first-touches which in reality is unexpected and shameful for player's to exhibit in the Premier League.

Kazenga Lua Lua was exceptional in the dieing minutes. He showed great composure on the ball, fantastic movement, and true maturity when put under pressure.

Obafemi Martins played well as he does most often. Lively. Energetic. Brave. His ball-control may have let him down on more than one occasion, but together with Peter Lovenkrands he is a real threat.

All in all, a great encounter marred by one moment of horror from Taylor. The Toon deserved better, and in the end Manchester United (The Champions of Europe, the league, and in fact the world) were very lucky to come away with all three points.

Final score:

Newcastle United 1 - 2 Manchester United

I thought you played with a lot of spirit last night guys but no points i'm afraid. You have a tough run in - best of luck.
