Now ensconced, with three back to back appearances under his belt, Steve Harper didn`t exactly have much of a chance with either goal West Brom scored. Looking back the keeper summarised the game at the Hawthorns, saying:

"We needed that. We had looked at it all week and saw the teams below us had difficult fixtures. We knew what a great opportunity it was to put much-needed daylight there, and we managed to do it. Albion have conceded a lot of goals, so it was important to come out of the blocks quickly.

We did not do that against Sunderland, and were second best in the first half. When you come away from home it is important to try to impose yourselves on the opposition, and we did that early.

I had a look up and there were 12 minutes left plus stoppage time. A two-goal lead is not as big as it looks in football. When a team, especially at home, gets one back, they are going to be on the front foot. We maybe dropped a little bit deep, and I was roaring at them to get up the pitch, but fortunately we managed to hang on in there.

There were outstanding individual performances. I thought Shola Ameobi was magnificent and Damien Duff was excellent. We were disappointed to let them back in it so quickly after we scored, but you have to show character."
