Newcastle United interested in Wigan's Ryan Taylor

Magpies gaffer Joe Kinnear hopes to tie-up a deal to sign 24-year-old right-back Ryan Taylor from Wigan Athletic, reports The Evening Chronicle.

The Englishman will be a welcome addition to the squad, as he can play in midfield, and in defence. Newcastle are desperately short on numbers at the back with Habib Beye out injured until the end of the campaign, with Michael Owen and Joey Barton also out for six and ten weeks respectively.

The fee for the former England U21 International is believed to be £2 million, with Wigan Athletic reluctant to part company with the player - but forced to do so as he is out-of-contract in the summer when he can move away from the JJB Stadium for free.

In related news, Lactics boss Steve Bruce put in a £6 million bid yesterday to sign out-of-favour Toon midfielder Charles N'Zogbia. The Taylor deal could be used as leverage by Wigan, as they try to convince the Magpies to relax their £8 million demands.

Fantastic move. We might actually get a point at the JJB without his guaranteed 1 free kick goal a season against us.
