No loan move for Toon target McManus
Newcastle United's hopes of landing Celtic captain Stephen McManus appears to have been thwarted. Gordon Strachan dismissed speculation last night about a potential move for McManus by stating that what the Magpies were offering was far below the club's valuation of the 26-year-old.
Celtic are interested in signing Toon left-back Jose Enrique, but do not want to include McManus as part of that deal. This however has proved to be a stumbling block for Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear who hoped to use the Spaniard as bait to lure McManus to the North-East.
It has emerged now that the Magpies' lack of finances forced them to rescind any overtures they may have made towards a permanent switch for the Scotland vice-Captain. In fact, Kinnear was hoping to sign the tough-tackling defender on loan for the rest of the season.
Gordon Strachan is unwilling to let McManus leave on loan, and the only way a switch can be made at this point, is if the St. James' Park club offer a substantial amount to The Bhoys, and hope the defender agrees personal terms with them.
