Newcastle rival Pompey for Argie speedster

Newcastle United have emerged as the most likely club to rival Portsmouth's hopes of landing Javier Saviola from Real Madrid.

The 27-year-old was expected to fly into Pompey today to complete a loan move, but it has emerged now that the Magpies are keen to hijack the deal from under Tony Adam's nose, and bring the Argentine superstar to St. James' Park.

With a growing striker crisis at the club Newcastle United desperately need reinforcements, and Saviola would be a welcome addition to gaffer Joe Kinnear's side.
