Magpies prepare for life without Given

Newcastle United are set to lose one of their best players, after Manchester City made an improved offer of £9 million for 32-year-old Irishman Shay Given. Potentially, the deal contains a player as well. Not surprisingly, it is highly-rated midfielder Michael Johnson who is valued at £6 million.

Potentially, the deal is worth almost £15 million, and Joe Kinnear will be pleased to accumulate as much of the funds as he can to try and chase down the targets he has identified this transfer window.

Vital Newcastle United broke the news of the £9 million offer a week ago, and it appears that City have done enough to persuade Kinnear, or for that matter, the Magpies' Board to reconsider their stance on the highly-rated stopper.

Given's representatives met with the club's Managing Director Derek Llambias last night to discuss the move, and it is understood that the transfer has been green-lighted.

The move will signal the end to one of the most drawn-out sagas of the current transfer window, and most fans will feel that Given should not be hated for leaving, but rather applauded for his years of loyal service.

I wish the lad all the best. Has been a great servant consistently let down by the mugs he's had to bail out in front of him. Had we kept a defence together with the talent of Woodgate and similar level players in it then he might well have had that faith rewarded. Instead he had to suffer Boumsong, Bramble, O'Brien and the current shower.

We have got a great goalkeeper thanks.if he does sign that is. I think we will have paid value for him. I dont think the signing will go ahead until after the 12pm deadline, this would ensure that he is not in goal against you on wednesday.

im a lifelong city fan from ireland and it would be fantastic news if shay were to join city.i hope that newcastle fans will not hold it against him if he does leave.not many footballers, let alone goalkeepers have been as loyal as shay has.

Won't hold it against the lad at all. He could have gone years ago, signed a new deal with the assurance that we'd challenge for trophies and we've gone back light years since then. Leaving now is his last chance to bag silverware.
