Man City make £8 million bid for Given

Man City make £8 million bid for Given

Shay Given has again returned to the spotlight on Tyneside with Manchester City upping their bid to sign him from the St. James' Park club.

According to The Sun City boss Mark Hughes is said to be keen on the Irish stopper and an improved bid of £8 million has been made in order for the transfer to go through.

Magpies gaffer Joe Kinnear is said to be unwilling to sell the 11-year-veteran goalkeeper, but it is understood that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley would sanction the sale if an offer of £12 million arrived at his doorstep.

City had initially opened with a bid of £5 million, which the Toon rejected, but with money to spend, and no limits on prices, Hughes can easily trump Kinnear's plans to hold onto Given by offering the magical number which would make Mike Ashley take notice.

The club already has two young goalkeepers in its ranks, as well as veteran Steve Harper who has the skills to step into Given's shoes if necessary, but Newcastle United may never be the same if Given is allowed to leave.

With finances tight, however, Kinnear may have to dip into whatever he can get from the market, and £12 million, plus the money Ashley has already sanctiond, i.e. £10 million, would make up for a nice warchest of £22 million with which the Magpies can buy much-needed reinforcements in an attempt steer clear of the relegation zone.

Shame if he left, but money talks.
