Løvenkrands set to complete Newcastle transfer

Newcastle United have taken a step forward in completing their first transfer of 2009 by inviting Danish winger Peter Løvenkrands to the club's training ground in a bid to ascertain his fitness. The 28-year-old will be on trial with the Magpies until Friday, and Joe Kinnear will watch him closely until then.

Speaking to The Journal, Assistant boss Chris Hughton was full of praise for the ex-Rangers and Schalke 04 man:

"Looking at him as a player and what he`s done in the past he is an experienced player and someone with pace. Whether we keep him or not depends on how he performs. He can operate on either flank or through the middle.

"You want to bring in the best quality that you can, sometimes you don`t get your first choice and you have to move on. But with Løvenkrands it is great value for us to have a look at him. We are still working behind the scenes to bring in the two or three players who we need."

Løvenkrands is believed to be the first of four potential signings that the Magpies are currently working on. The Dane was a target for Sir Bobby Robson in 2000, but having resisted Newcastle's overtures back then, the prospect of playing for the Magpies eight years later, after a disastrous time with Schalke 04, seems to have been too good for Løvenkrands to refuse.
