'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Contracts: David Edgar

As another of the seven out of contract this summer, David Edgar hasn`t quite garnered the attention of Michael Owen when it`s come to signing a new deal. However Eddie revealed today he knows he is facing a tough ride to get a new deal with the way the new management structure works. The Canadian said:

"My mother always told me things happen for a reason. I was given my chance because of a bad injury to Habib Beye, but that is football and you have to take your chances. Hopefully, this is my time to make a name for myself, but it is up to the gaffer whether or not I play.

I only have to the end of the season, so I need to show I can play here. I might not be needed, but that is football. You are given your chance, and it is up to you to take it. That is my dream. I grew up supporting the club, and always will. I want to stay, but I have to do what is best for me.

This could be my chance to hopefully earn a new contract, or be in the shop window for other teams. I just want to play football, and I was happy to be out there against Liverpool. It was only my 17th appearance in almost two years. I have to take this chance with both hands, and hopefully secure a run in the team. That is all I can ask for.

They are at every game, keeping tabs on us, and all I could do was play in the reserves and hope to do well. Maybe I did enough to show I was ready to step in, and that is why the boss played me there when he could have changed things around."
