'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Spurs sniffing about Given? Aye righto

Once again the Daily Mail continues its rabid anti-Newcastle stance, this time with another attempt to unsettle players. The Mail speculates that Harry Redknapp is targeting Shay to replace the so far hapless £8m flop Gomes in goal for his side. Seems a funny story to come out when about four hours earlier our stopper admitted he hoped to stay at NUFC for the long term. Then again the Mail never let facts get in the way of a good ruse, especially where we`re concerned.

However the paper provides quotes from Redknapp - "'Shay Given is a great goalkeeper who I admire. Any manager would have to be interested in him if he became available" - and the inevitable sources 'close to the players`.

This news is a bit random... usually the Daily Mail links all our players away from the club, now they are linking all sorts of players to our club! I doubt you'll lose Given to us... he has no reason to leave the Geordies.

I hate it when this sort of crap gets printed about our players being wanted - usually by L'pool or Man Ure. I don't think it's right either when other clubs have to suffer it. Much as I'd love to have Shay Given at Spurs, I don't like this tactic of unsettling players. I'm hoping that Gomes can settle his nerves and start performing like the keeper we know he can be!

I wouldn't assume only Harry Redknapp is looking Given over as a possible buy. There are few tried and tested english-speaking players of his calibre. I wouldn't be surprised if there are offers in January. What sort of a contract does he have? Is there a buy-out clause?
Sindbad
Nothing so far and he's still got a reasonable length of time left on his contract.
BaldEagle
I don't see that Given would want to leave Newcastle.
