Owen update

Joe Kinnear today provided an assessment of the striking options available to the club, with Mark Viduka and Michael Owen at the top of the list. With Shola and Martins struggling to gel, Kinnear hopes that he will have Michael Owen fit again for the Villa game at the weekend. The gaffer said:

'Michael Owen I'm hoping will be in contention for the Aston Villa match. We will have to monitor that day by day to be honest. Mark Viduka is obviously six or seven weeks off and obviously they are top-class players.

This game on Tuesday night has become massive and not just to eradicate that result. We want to get people looking forward and thinking forward. We can't dwell on it. I'm not trying to rub out the importance of it or the disappointment of it - no one was more disappointed than myself.

You do get knocks in life and we've got to show we're bigger than that. It was a really low dressing room after that game, but we sat down and spoke about it, and we've got to put that away and get on with the game on Tuesday night.

It's a must-win for us. I am an optimistic person and if we were to win our next two home games that would put a completely different slant on everything from now on.'
