Ahead of his crunch tie with Spurs on Wednesday, a beleaguered Chris Hughton was trying manfully to keep the good ship Newcastle afloat. Speaking to the media he attempted to boost a team at rock bottom following the stuffing off West Ham. He said:
"We have a great group of lads and felt we had a team on the pitch that was good enough to get a . We had to play a central defender in centre midfielder, which was a blow to us, but still we felt we could contain them. We knew they would have a spring in their step because they had a new manager but despite that, we cannot defend like we did.
Every circumstance is different, the only thing we can do is react to the circumstances of the moment and the circumstances here are no different to what they were a few days ago. At some stage they will be resolved but at this stage nobody knows in what way."
