Distin Waits On Toon

Manchester City captain Sylvain Distin says he will wait to see if Stuart Pearce's side qualify for Europe before penning a new contract with the club. And Newcastle could still have a say in his future ... if they make it into the UEFA Cup ahead of City.

The 28-year-old French defender will have a year left on his current contract at the end of this season, and has been linked with a return to Newcastle United. It was said if Graeme Souness was still manager, the Scot had him top of his list of transfers in the summer.

But obviously the situation has changed with the sacking of Souness, but the player is still reported to want to return to Tyneside ... if the new manager (when appointed) wants him.

European competition is the deciding factor with Distin, who says he is keen to showcase his talents on the European stage after spending the last four years with City and not having a sniff.

Distin: 'When I signed for City, it was because I wanted to play in European competition. I am taking my time as I want to make sure the club and I are going in the same direction.'

On what terms did he leave you? Would you be happy to see him back?

Did he ever 'leave'? I thought he was only at Newcastle on loan.
