Newcastle in for Cuellar

According to the Daily Mail Newcastle are to lodge a £5m bid for the Rangers defender. Walter Smith is known to be keen to hold on to the defended. He was the lynchpin that held together the mean Ranger defence last season.

By all accounts the defender is well respected and courted by several teams in England. Kevin Keegan is known to be keen on the 6'3' Spaniard who could be a great partner for Taylor or Faye. He has even said Cuellar is the best defender in Britain.

Faye has been linked with a move to Blackburn but since Mark Hughes moved to Manchester City, that interest seems to have died. However it could be revived if Big Sam gets the job at Blackburn. Personally I would love to see the Spaniard here to battle with the increasing impressive Taylor and the solid Faye for a berth in the Newcastle defence.

A final note of caution, can anybody remember the last defender we bought from Rangers? £8m for Boumsong, my last memory of whom will be allowing Peter Crouch past him in the penalty area then deciding to rugby tackle him!

All I would say to the Toon Army is: remember what happened last time you signed a big money defender from Rangers. Yes, you got Mr Boumsong, and you paid £8 million for him. Cuellar is a decent defender and equipped himself well in Europe for the Huns, but you've been burned already. On another note, if you're thinking of trying to sign real quality from the SPL (Aiden McGeady), forget it, he's going nowhere.
