Mort Says: 'Keegan Will Have Funds To Spend'

Kevin Keegan is expected to be handed quite a hefty war chest this summer to strengthen the Toon squad to try and turn them into a force again, with Chris Mort confirming this will be the case, he also insists that signings will be for the long, and not just short-term: 'Over the summer, we will look to strengthen the squad further,' Mort told BBC Sport. 'In addition to immediate fixes, we will want to acquire players that can help make Newcastle United a top team for the medium and long-term.'

So far efforts to sign top players have been knocked back with European clubs chosen over the Toon, despite them being offered more money, because other clubs can offer them European football, but they will keep going and will eventually get the names wanted: 'It is frustrating that Modric, like Woodgate before him, should take less money than we offered to move to the bright lights of London, and European football with Tottenham next season.

'But these are the sorts of difficulties that should get easier to address once we build a squad that competes at the right end of the table.'

Will players keep snubbing St James' in favour of other clubs, already playing European football for example, or will they soon start coming as Keegan looks to make the Toon a force again?
