Shearer Money For Charity

Alan Shearer hangs up his boots this summer with a testimonial against Celtic and he will donate all the proceeds - £1m - to charity.

United's FA Cup involvement permitting, Celtic will travel to Tyneside on May 11 to take on an Alan Shearer Select XI, a side expected to see the likes of Les Ferdinand and Rob Lee back in black-and-white shirts.

Shearer: 'I hope that, by pledging the money from my testimonial game to charity and worthy causes, people less fortunate than myself will also benefit in some way from my football career.

'I have lived my boyhood dream: I have played in front of the most loyal fans in the world, captained my country, played for a team I supported as a boy and broken the goal-scoring record of a Tyneside legend (Jackie Milburn). Now I have the final opportunity to say farewell to the fans who have supported me so well throughout my career.

'I have enjoyed every minute of my football career and my time at Newcastle and I still do. I would like to thank my friends and my family who have supported me down the years. Their support has been incredible and second to none.'

Celtic have pledged to bring a strong side to St James's Park - including Roy Keane. Celtic chairman Brian Quinn said: 'We're sure that a number of our supporters will make their way to Newcastle to play their part in football history and to pay tribute to a true footballing legend.'

As a Villa Fan I've given Shearer grief in the past, I'm sure you wouldn't expect anything less. But I must congratulate Big Al, first for the fantastic contribution he has given the game domestically and Internationally. Secondly for his wonderful gesture of giving his testimonial money to charity. Good on you Al.
